How To Protect Your Safe From Damage And Corrosion

Troy Murray

One advantage of a good-quality safe is that the internal mechanisms are well-lubricated. As a result, the internal components of your safe will not require maintenance. However, there are a few other components of the safe you will need to maintain if you want to not find yourself with a safe that won't open or is suffering from corrosion.

Lubricate the Door Bolts

You will need to lubricate the door bolts from time to time. Open the door and extend the bolts. Then, wipe a small amount of lubricant onto the bolts. Doing so will allow the safe to swing open and closed more easily and reduce the risk that the bolts will become damaged due to friction.

Clean with Ammonia

Keep your safe in good condition by using ammonia as a cleaner and wiping it with a soft cloth. Apply the ammonia cleaner first and let it sit for a few minutes. Then, wipe along the grain and remove all of the ammonia.

Dehumidify

Humidity can cause metal safes to corrode. Therefore, it might make sense to install a dehumidifier. This is a machine you will place in the room that will draw moisture from the air and transfer it to a container you can empty out. An alternative is a dehumidifier that uses a hose connected to a nearby drain.

To also reduce humidity, place a fan inside the room where the safe is installed. If the room already has a ceiling fan, running it should be good enough. Make sure that there is some space between the safe and the wall to allow for adequate circulation.

If you will mount the safe on a wall, place the safe in a location where it will be free from obstructions. For example, you will not want the safe in a location where a door could regularly hit it. While safes are highly durable, anything can experience wear and tear over time.

Hire a Repair Specialist

When your safe has been damaged by a fire or flood, you may want to completely replace your safe. However, if your safe was very expensive, it may be worthwhile to instead hire a safe repair specialist.

It is also a good idea to hire a safe repair specialist if you discover that your safe will not open. You might think that you have simply forgotten the combination, but like everything, safes can break. When you have your safe opened, make sure that the methods used to open your safe will not be destructive so that you can keep your safe.
