Own A Motorcycle For The First Time? Tips For Keeping It In Tip Top Shape

Troy Murray

If you purchased a new motorcycle, you need to learn how to keep it in good shape so you can enjoy riding it. This also saves you money in expensive repairs. Follow the tips below to keep your motorcycle from getting mechanical problems and cosmetic damage.

Low Engine Oil

Make sure your motorcycle always has enough oil. To check the oil levels, put your motorcycle upright so the oil level will be stable. Look on the motorcycle for an oil level window, and make sure the needle is sitting between the maximum and minimum markings. If the oil level is below the minimum marking, remove the oil cap and pour in the oil that is specified for the type of bike you have until the needle is up where it should be. If you are not sure what type of oil your motorcycle takes, refer to the owner's manual for this information.

If you run your motorcycle when it is low on engine oil, it causes poor lubrication in your piston rings, piston, and engine valves. Piston rings are inexpensive and generally easy to replace, but if the piston itself is damaged, you may have to replace it, and this may be expensive. If the engine valves are damaged, this can get expensive, because the mechanic has to remove the engine and take it apart in order to get to the valves

Low Coolant Levels

You also need to keep an eye on the low coolant levels. On the coolant reservoir, there is two level marks. The coolant level should be somewhere between these two marks. If it is not, add a 50/50 mixture of antifreeze and distilled water until the level is correct. If you are not sure where this reservoir is, refer to your owner's manual.

Running your motorcycle while it is low on coolant can cause it to overheat. This can damage the iron block engine, aluminum head, and the aluminum block. All of these things may be very expensive to repair or replace.

Cosmetic Damage

If you transport your motorcycle on a trailer, it can easily get cosmetic damage from road debris hitting it. To take care of this problem, you can purchase an enclosed trailer to completely cover the motorcycle. These trailers generally have ramps to make it easy for you to put your motorcycle on it, and some of them have side doors to give you easy access to it. You can also purchase enclosed trailers that have storage inside of them for spare tires, spare battery, and other things.

An enclosed trailer also offers security, as you can lock it when you stop somewhere, or have to stay somewhere overnight. This will make sure your motorcycle stays safe and secure.

Follow these tips and your motorcycle will last much longer for you. For more information, talk to a professional like Ace Trailer Sales.
